How the gorge got it's name

As early as 1875, people were so taken by this natural wonder that bridges and walkways were built with money donated by Prince Liechtenstein II to make the Klamm accessible to the public.

After several failed attempts opening the gorge for the public, a handful of members of the local Alpine Association succeeded in 1875 in making the wild and romantic gorge accessible to the public. Unfortunately, the brave pioneers of the project soon ran out of money. Not knowing where else to turn for help, they approached Johann II, Prince of Liechtenstein, who owned a hunting ground in the nearby town of Großarl. With his donation of 600 guilders the development was completed in 1876. And in the process, a name was found for the most significant canyon in the Austrian Alps –Liechtensteinklamm, or Prince Liechtenstein’s Gorge.

If you visit this special gorge in Austria, I suggest arriving at 8 am in the morning to avoid the streams of tourists.
